The Artwork

The Story Behind the Design

This artwork is depicting our community gathering for our abundant feats of seafood along the shoreline. It shows our shell midden sites that once were prominent along our shores, remnants of shells along our shores, remnants of shells left by our Ancestors after thousands of years. The Shell middens represent community, our hunting & gathering practices, our relationships with the lands and Sea Country, the animals & our seasonal indicators.

This is also a story of Caring for Country and Caring for one another, traditions, sharing & honouring those before us & that stewardship of Country.

Product Care

Cleaning the rug

Vacuum Regularly. Avoid any cleaning agent with bleach or strong chemicals. It is best to try an area for colourfastness before using across a large area of the rug. We recommend to use a dry powder style of cleaner as they can be vacuumed out of the rug and do not leave any residue. When cleaning, always blot, and never scrub or rub abrasively.

DO NOT run vacuum directly over outer serged edge of carpet. This can create fraying. Clean spills immediately by blotting with a cloth or sponge. Remove any grease spots with ordinary dry cleaning solvents. If you do vacuum over the edge of the rug it can cause serge yarn to become frayed and torn. It is always best to test a cleaner on an inconspicuous spot on the carpet/rug before applying to the entire piece.
Professional or periodic cleanings using the power spray-extraction carpet cleaning method are recommended. You should have the smallest possible amount of cleaning chemical used when you hire a professional cleaner. Allow to dry flat on the floor.

Not recommended for use outdoors or in bright sunlight as the material colours may fade over time.

Zartisha Davis

Zartisha Davis is a proud Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi, Cobble Cobble, and Butchulla woman whose art is grounded in culture, family, and Saltwater stories.

From her very first painting at just six years old to designing First Nations dresses for the Sunshine Coast Lightning, her journey has been shaped by strong matriarchs and cultural foundations.

Her practice is dedicated to keeping stories alive- especially the Shell Middens passed down by her uncle, which speak to the long history of gathering, connection, and care for Land and Sea. Through her unique mark-making style, she honours the generations that came before her and continues to share that legacy with pride.
